Jordan Spieth Wins U.S. Open as Dustin Johnson Misses Putt (Video)

Jordan Spieth, with a one-under-par 69, finished at five under to win the United States Open in University Place, Wash., giving him his second straight major victory. Entering the final round at Chambers Bay Golf Course, Spieth was tied for the lead at four under with Jason Day, Branden Grace and Dustin Johnson. Spieth, the winner of this year’s Masters, bogeyed his first hole to fall behind but rebounded with birdies on Nos. 8 and 12 to move back into a tie for the lead with Grace, his partner in the penultimate group, who plays primarily in Europe.Spieth looked like he had this wrapped up when he rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, turning toward Puget Sound before he pumped his fist. With Branden Grace hitting a tee shot onto the railroad tracks to make double bogey, Spieth had a three-shot lead.He took double bogey on the 17th hole. Louis Oosthuizen made one last birdie -- six of his last seven holes for a 67 -- to post at 4-under 276. Johnson, who had a two-shot lead at the turn until missing so many putts on the back nine, was forgotten. Spieth, a wire-to-wire winner at Augusta National, showed he can be clutch. He drilled a 3-wood off the back slope to 15 feet and two-putted for his birdie and a 69 to finish at 5-under 275. Johnson, in the final group behind him, made a 4-foot birdie on the 17th and needed a birdie to force a playoff.Johnson had a chance to win on No. 18. After hitting birdie on 17, he set himself up for a 12-foot putt for eagle that would have won the tournament. He just missed, however, hitting the ball past the cup, then blew a five-footer for birdie that would have forced a Monday playoff. With the win, Spieth also becomes the youngest player to win two career majors since 1922, and the youngest U.S. Open winner since 1923. Oosthuizen and Dustin Johnson took second place at 4-under.
