Fabricio Werdum def. Cain Velasquez submission (guillotine choke) Round 3 New Heavyweight Champion

MEXICO CITY – In a back-and-forth fight that threatened to end at any moment, UFC interim heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum spoiled Cain Velasquez’s homecoming and unified the title. Werdum (20-5-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC) went toe-to-toe with Velasquez (13-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) over three rounds and hurt him enough to draw an exhausted takedown attempt, which he promptly capitalized on with a guillotine choke that forced a tap at the 2:13 mark of the frame.Velasquez came out with a kick and Werdum ended up on his back. Velasquez didn’t want to fight with Werdum on the ground and let him up. Velasquez got cut over his left eye early in the first round. Velasquez took Werdum to the ground and had side control. Werdum was able to roll out and he was on his back, but at that point Velasquez let him up. Velasquez threw more leg kicks with the fight on the feet. Werdum landed a nice jab, but Velasquez responded with a flurry of his own. Velasquez went for a knee to the body but Werdum caught it and took him down. Werdum had Velasquez in the clench and threw a knee. Werdum landed a big upper cut, but Velasquez continued to push forward and win the exchanges. Werdum began to land some big shots and it looked like Velasquez was wobbled but he recovered. Werdum then wobbled Velasquez again, but Velasquez was able to recover and go back to work. Velasquez looked like he was beginning to feel the effects of the altitude. Werdum began to land some strong right hands and put Velasquez in trouble again. Cain opened up the 2nd round with leg kicks that Werdum wouldn't check. Werdum tagged Cain with a left hook. Real back-and-forth stuff with Werdum catching Cain with an uppercut. Werdum rocked Cain with several punches and the crowd was in a state of shock. With Cain's corner calling for a takedown he did go for it and nearly got reversed. Again, Cain was unwilling to bfool around with Werdum's dangerous guard. A head kick by Cain stunned Werdum and then Werdum went for a guillotine, let go, then blasted Cain with two more knees. Velasquez dove for a takedown and Werdum secured a guillotine and Cain IMMEDIATELY tapped to get the win and become the NEW heavyweight champion.
