Jessica Sanchez singing the National Anthem at the PBS Memorial Day Concert 2012
Jessica Sanchez made her first public appearance on TV after her American Idol stint when she performed at the 2012 National Memorial Day concert held at the West Lawn in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, May 27, 2012.
The National Memorial Day concert which started at around 8 p.m. ET and was featured live at PBS on Sunday night honored the military service of all men and women in uniform, their families at home and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Jessica Sanchez, 16, who lost the American Idol Season 11 title from Phillip Phillips last Wednesday, May 23, was chosen to sing US national anthem, with Natalie Cole, Trace Adkins, and American Idol Season 5 alumni Chris Daughtry as among other performers that night. The performance was significant to Sanchez given that she has military connections in her own family. Her father, Gilbert Sanchez, currently stationed in Singapore, has served several tours of duty in Iraq and Kuwait with the U.S. Navy. Meanwhile, Sanchez’s grandfather Edward M. Bugay is a retired Navy veteran.
Jessica Sanchez won the praises from the judges and her fans worldwide and the American Idol three judges. Her duet with Jennifer Holiday singing “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” was touted as one of the best, if not the best, among her peformances in the whole Season 11 of the American Idol.
